(Open Ended Play)

Toddlers and preschoolers will love exploring herbs and flowers with this fun sensory activity!

It’s also one of our favorite water play activities for engaging all the senses.  The smell of dried herbs, the beautiful color flower petal, splashing in the cool water – what more could you ask for in a toddler activity?

Materials:

-yellow water in 2 glass jars

-yellow flower petals on 2 container (we used jar lids)

-1/2 tsp turmeric powder

-1/2 tsp dried herbs

-cut sticks on 2 muffin cups

-a spoon

-a big bowl

-a tray

Instruction:

-present the materials in front of your toddler

-let your toddler explore freely

My 31 months old was just excited for anything water related. The flower petal, tiny sticks, dried herbs and powder were a bonus for her. She scooped, sprinkled, added, poured, picked, grabbed, imagined, transferred – and she had a grand old sensory time for 50 something minutes.

She loves to see and even help me in the kitchen on her step ladder. From observing how she played with these materials, it reminded me on how I am in the kitchen. The way she pour, sprinkle herbs, add powder, sprinkle flower and add tiny branches. I could see myself in how she did it all. It's no secret that very young children learn by watching the world around them.

Turmeric powder and dried herbs brought nice fragrance even when none were heated up in this soup. The whole room smelled nice.

She scooped water along with its content from the big bowl and added it to the glass jars. And spent time mixing up her concoctions.

Soup station was the best!

My kiddo had a blast playing with this and I had a blast seeing my almost expired herbs finally get used.

How’s that for a win-win situation?

What a wonderful way to spend the day! Water play, sensory play and fine motor development all rolled into one super fun time activity.

This herb soup sensory bin was really perfect and absolutely the best way to make it to nap time.

When will you make soup station?
