(Open ended play)

Our daughter is still 2.5 years old and weaving is not really her thing yet. I didn’t want to leave our daughter out with the fun while some older kids did weaving. The closest we could think of was threading for her, a super simple threading of course.

Something where she can weave or “thread”, count and enjoy an erray of pretty colors. Perhaps learn them too!

Number weave took me less than 5 minutes to create. Seriously!

Materials:

-construction papers, various colors

-pencil

-marker

-tape

-scissors

-ribbon

-a paper

-a tray

Instructions:

-cut construction papers into 10 strips

-add numbers of 1-10 on the center of each strip

-roll numbered strips into a open tube, secure with tape and stick them randomly to the paper with a tape

-set up the tray: paper with numbered open tube and ribbon

-present the materials to your toddler and ask him/her to weave/thread the numbers from 1 to 10

Y enjoyed this simple game. Counting is her current favorite things. She already can count (roughly) up to 100. Currently she knew number 1 to 20 by heart. We try consciously not to quiz her unless we’re sure she already had known the answer. That’s why we prepared number of 1 to 10 here. You can adjust according to the stage of your own toddler.

She found the challenge of randomly positioned numbers as an exciting target. She would say its number or/and color loudly, to be followed by saying “and then number (next number)” while weaving the ribbon in and out the paper tube gently. She realized that if she rushed it, she may destroy the rather fragile paper tube.

She learnt about numbers, colors, fine motor skill and focus. That’s a lot with this oh so basic play.
