(Open Ended Play)

First of all, I wonder, how do you eat your watermelon? We have been eating our watermelon mostly with a spoon. We simply cut it in half and dig in right away with a spoon. Spoons do a much better job of scooping the flesh than forks. Also, forks are terrible at holding watermelon juice.

We went to the park this morning, only for a stroll since Y is still have a bad cough and rather runny nose every now and then. I brought us a half watermelon and a spoon as our breakfast by the meadow.

The thing is, we always ended up with a half watermelon skin. Usually she would throw it to the park’s trash bin. It’s one of her favorite thing to do: to throw. I had to persuade her this morning not to throw it though, because we’ll use it to make the cave. She doesn’t know what a ‘cave’ mean until I say “Let’s make a tunnel with this!”

She shouted “Tunnel!” in approval.

I knew I’ve won my case. Phew.

We live rather far from any natural cave here, so we use our half watermelon skin left over to make the cave. This watermelon cave is perfect for small world play! We added animals and natural found elements to create a life-like scene. Here we have used pea sprout as grass and Lego Duplo farm animals. She incorporated the cave with the whole set of Lego Duplo farm edventures. Oh my, how much fun she had!
