I heard “walking rainbow” term for the first time last month and has been wanting to try it ever since. However a toddler is known for very low on patience. All she wanted to do was pouring and mixing the whole set in one big bowl. Can you imagine how could we manage to wait for 6 hours until she play freely with these water jars? If you wonder why we post so much these past days, this is the answer: to buy 6 hours walking rainbow waiting time. I t’s so worth it!

I prepared a tray with 6 re-used salsa glass jars, 3 primary food colouring (red, green, yellow), and 6 paper towels and present it in front of my daughter.

I asked her to pour water into 3 glass jars (3/4 full) and to add few drops of food colouring into each of those water jars.

I helped to place all the jars into a circle and alternate them so we have a jar with coloured water and then an empty one. I then asked her to add the pre-folded into strip paper towel, to dip each paper towel strip into one of the colours and the connecting empty jar
Here comes the daunting part, to let them be for a few hours. Rest assured, mummy has prepared several tray activities to distract her attention!

After 1, 3, 5 and 6 hour we observed changes on these jars.

Do you see the red water traveling up the paper towels?

Or yellow water?

Or blue water traveling up? It happened almost instantly at first.
The coloured water was observed to be traveling up the paper towels and we could see the colour starting to go down the paper towels towards the empty jars. After a while the empty jars would start filling with coloured water.

After 6 hours, all the jars were filled with coloured water. The primary colours had mixed to make secondary colours and we could see where the colours have travelled by looking at the paper towels.

I mentioned how the water walked with my walking fingers. She followed along with her fingers walking on the glass jar while shouting each colour she passed through. It was surely made my day to see her so excited.
