(Open Ended Play)

This is a late post from our hotel trip last weekend. We were staying in a business hotel for 3 days and 2 nights. We have brought along few things to survive outdoor’s stormy weather forecast, but most of the time we play with whatever available in the hotel room. One of the best hit was sofa play. The business hotel we stayed in was huge and there was a big sofa in one of its corner. We made 2 kinds of play with it last weekend.

The first was to make a cave. It has a removable single-cushion seat, a sofa arm on its left side, a part of sofa back, but without any right sofa arm. I helped her built it by removing the single-cushion seat, adding some pillow and a coffee table to act as right sofa arm, lifted up the cushion seat on top of its arms and back which acted as cave walls. Voila! We got a cave in the room, yes!

She was so happy with the cave. She stayed the whole first afternoon inside, occasionally got out of her cave to pick some toys or eat and drink or went to potty. I cleared up the cave when she went asleep, but she asked for more cave time the next day. So for two consecutive days, this sofa was turned into cave. She defined it as “tunnel” though, instead of a cave. What can I say. It is her imaginary world.

The second was to do a race. Oh Gosh, it was so much fun even for me! I helped her turned the the single-cushion seat upside down (the back side was more flat) and leaned it against the sofa. We lined up the Lego Duplo bottom part trains and Ikea tractor on top and the race begin.

Y would say “Ready, set, go!” and count each car right when she was pushing it to slide down. Once all cars were already on the floor, she would slide herself down. She would pick those cars, climb back up, line them and the race could begin again.
