Our 2 1/2 year old Y refused to be helped for putting on her shoes today. It surprised me as it came out of no where. We already have a routine. Whenever we’re ready and we cue “shoes,” she’ll go to the door and find her shoes but stay there to wait for my help. That was not the case today. She said “no!”
I stepped back right away.

Y started with the left shoes on her right foot. I re-stepped in a flash, switched the shoes in her hand and stepped back. She hold the shoes on its lower back part using one hand, push her right foot in, toes touching the front part of the shoes, snuggle the back of her foot into the shoes, pull the strap out and fasten its velcro closure.

Shoes with velcro closure are a good option for very young children. The velcro closure makes it simple and quick to put on, and with time he or she can learn to take them off and put them on on their own.
Y enjoy feeling “big” when she can do things herself. Her big grin blooms and she did her happy-round-around-the-room-dance right after she nailed it.

Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter wants to show us all the things he can do for himself in this classic, funny, and heartwarming book. Whether he’s tying his shoes, coloring a picture, or riding his bike, both us parent and Y could relate to his beloved story. A perfect way to teach children about independence!
