(Open ended play)

We just did a whole day of pirate theme. Never had this done before, but it was so much fun!

Y loves Dora the Explorer, especially the Pirate Adventure part. We had once survived unexpected 12 hours long drive with few hours of these 3 episodes on repeat. I couldn’t think any better idea to ignite the spark of pirate theme: it should began with a treasure map (7 seas, bridge and a treasure island at the end)!

I gave her the treasure map roll at home,

I copied roughly one of Dora’s treasure map and adjusted it to our treasure boat island.

She opened it excitedly while pointing and shouting all the points of stops.

For the 7 seas, I handed over to her the Usborne Wipe-Clean Dot to Dot Pirates book.

She was super thrilled beyond measure. She traced all the numbers. It was her first time so at some point I helped her when she asked my help. I let her explore freely most of the time.

After bath-tub session with her pirate’s crew, we were ready for an adventure to find the bridge. She held her treasure map tightly with her at all times. On our way to our favorite grocery store there’s a sky bridge that we passed through. I pretend to be the bridge and asked her to sing a few Pirate song together with me as a task (which I knew she already familiar with by heart).

Back at home, we reached for the Treasure Island: a sensory bin full of gold coins and a pirate ship for the best pirate of the day! She played non-stop with this sensory for almost an hour.

What a busy pirate, sorting coins, counting her gold while sprinkling sands.
