(Open Ended Play)

Peppa Pig Board Books have been a big hit in our home for 6 months straight now. None other book (even more for book series) has been loved to this level. Y would ask for a read aloud session either with me or her daddy after wakes up, mid day, afternoon, evening or even when she’s about to go to sleep. It’s sturdy, bright and familiar for little ones.

We as parents love its simple daily life story. We let her choose her own favorites, which happen to be slightly changing over this past 6 months. None of us got bored with these books nor their stories (maybe not just yet, haha).

Recently she began to ask us to read “my mummy” and “my daddy” of Peppa Pig series so much. One particular page has been her utmost interest:

“My mummy is very wise

she can read map

And then make paper aeroplanes

out of them!”

Each time we got to this page, she would shout “Aeroplanes!” She would then look around to find her Lego Duplo yellow airplane to play it around or on me while kept on asking to continue read for her. Today I had an urge to make a real paper airplane to see how she’ll react.

Materials:

-one sheet of construction paper, A4 size, your choice of color

Instruction:

-Fold the paper in half vertically. Unfold the paper and fold each of the top corners into the center line.

-Fold the top edges into the center line.

-Fold the wings down, matching the top edges up with the bottom edge of the body

-The finished plane should look like this.

She was waiting patiently, to luck on my part, until the paper airplane was done. At first she had no expectation, pretty much content with her yellow one. As soon as I threw the paper one, the play was on!

The paper airplane was off from my hand, she followed it closely until it landed. She’d say “Oh no, airplane, airplane!” and looked at me before said “Ready, set, go!” and off she go with her yellow fella on flying mode on towards the paper one. She became like a boomerang, on a quest to fetch, return to me and wait for another repeat series. We managed to play this same routine for a solid one hour! We moved to other rooms inside our home of course. Can you imagine? She had so much energy and emitted a lot of love towards this game, made me feel bad that I hadn’t make paper airplane any earlier.

The days are long but the years are short, and when it comes to kids, the only constant is change. I don’t know how long it last, but let me just soak this abundance feelings from my heart. Oh kiddo, why you grow up so fast?
