(Open Ended Play)

We were stuck in a business hotel room due to rainy day outside. Pool was closed. Playing with water in the tub was not an option because kiddo would love to swim outdoor.

Solution: oats!

Materials:

-oats (any kind available will do)

-pipe cleaners and inventis circle puzzle (any item with various color will do)

-a spoon

-a container

-a duplo lego figurine

Instruction:

-present the materials to your toddler

-let your toddler explore freely

We are staying in a business hotel for 3 days and 2 nights this weekend. We brought a ziplock pouch of quick cooking oats for snacks and breakfast. She wakes up rather late so we knew she’ll miss hotel breakfast buffet. She’s an oatmeal lover, so quick cooking oats to the rescue!

It was raining and we’re stuck in our hotel room. Since we have rather lots of oats, I thought of giving her an open ended play tray with oats. Just as like how she enjoys sands and water, Y really had a great time playing with oats. She soon put her hands into the oat dunes, grabbed a handful of oats, felt how it seeped through her fingers and felt the texture of each and every piece of oat flakes on her finger tips. She then began to dig and pour using the spoon.

Y found her most favourite thing: to pour into a container and dump its content into a dune. She buried the boy duplo lego figurine under another oat dunes in the process. “Bye bye,” she said.

Did you realize that some materials have gone missing from the tray on the second picture? Yes, no circle puzzle nor pipe cleaners on the tray anymore. Where are they?

They rested peacefully in the bottom of hotel fridge. Y put them there as soon as she was presented the tray as her first act.
