(Activity)

We learn about sizes today using variant of citrus: grapefruit (the biggest), lemon (bigger), orange (smaller) and lime (the smallest)

I traced circles of each fruit on a construction paper.

I let her to touch, sniff, and play for quite a while and she began pointing those fruits one by one while saying their names.

She called both grapefruit and orange as “orange” and both lemon and lime as “lime.” Then she began matching them based on their circle sizes.

I then borrowed the grapefruit and said “grapefruit is the biggest” and put it on the biggest circle.

She shouted and lifted up the lemon and orange. She kept them in her hands, so I let her hold them and pointed the lemon while saying “lemon is bigger than orange” and moved my point finger to the orange.

“Hmm, where should we put the bigger lemon?” I asked her.

She then put the lemon on the second biggest circle.

“And how about the smaller orange?” I asked her.

She put the orange on the second smallest circle.

“Lime is the smallest among them here, “ I said and asked further “Shall we put put it to its circle?”

“Yes,” she said while putting the lime on the smallest circle.

I put these citruses back on the top of the tray and let her play.

The grapefruit is kind of heavy for her so she let it roll a lot using both hands

Shouting “lemon“ and placing it is so exciting for her

but nothing is more exciting than orange. She lifted up the orange while shouting “orange orange” before finally placed it down.

She re-matched all of them on her term freely like matching a puzzle. She even mumbled the words “big” and “small” many times. Realizing that she understood well and could probably answer confidently right, I asked which one is bigger or smaller on two citruses at a time. She answered right for each questions. Oh well, she seems to know better than I thought before this play.
